We suggest arriving at 30+ minutes prior to the start of the performance to complete the safety protocol check in and to find your seat. Late seating (when available) will take place at the first appropriate break in the performance. In 1945 a group of local artisans gathered under the guidance of Chick Laird to present classic opera with the finest voices in Wilmington at affordable prices. Today, our patrons are geographically and culturally as diverse as ever, stretching across the East Coast while at the same time reaching deeply into our Wilmington roots.

Before it was a movie theater, however, it hosted many operas, symphonies, burlesque shows, vaudeville, and minstrel shows. It reopened in 1971, partnering with classical institutions such as the First State Ballet Theatre and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. The building was acquired by a non-profit arts organization in 1973, which has organized its shows and events ever since. In January 2015, The Grand Opera House assumed operation of another illustrious historic theater in downtown Wilmington, The Playhouse on Rodney Square. The Playhouse (which was also called The DuPont Theater) was opened in 1913 as one of the select theaters on the Broadway touring circuit.

Zachery Lockwood, Assistant to the General DirectorZachery Tyler Lockwood joined the OperaDelaware staff in April 2023 after assistant stage managing for the company’s productions of Così fan tutte (2022) and La traviata (2023). Outside of OD, Lockwood (tenor) is an active performer and music educator with a focus on building community through the arts and advocating for innovative/underutilized vocal works. Lockwood has been praised for his ‘robust sound’ that possesses a ‘youthful exuberance.’ He currently sits as an Adjunct Professor of Applied Voice at Harford Community College. Lockwood brings to OperaDelaware an organized and community-driven approach towards its mission.

Located in the heart of Wilmington, we serve the entire metropolitan area. Commissioned by the Delaware Grand Lodge of Masons, a fraternal Freemason organization, the Grand Opera House originally served as a temple and an auditorium. It was designed in the Second Empire style by Wilmington native Thomas Dixon, a prominent architect. The design of the Grand Opera House is notable for its use of cast iron and for the Freemasonry symbolism incorporated into its facade. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural importance. For travel by car, Wilmington is located just off I-95, I-495, I-295, and the New Jersey Turnpike/Delaware Memorial Bridge.

He holds Bachelor’s degrees in both Vocal Performance & Music Education, and a Master’s degree in Vocal Pedagogy, from Towson University. OperaDelaware is the only professional opera company in the state and the 11th oldest in the country. It is a source of economic revitalization and a source of arts education for many schools in the area that have none. The company employs nearly 250 full- and part-time local artists and staffers throughout the season and operates on a $1.5 million annual budget. The Grand, as the opera house is commonly known, has hosted performers from William “Buffalo Bill” Cody and Ethel Barrymore to John Philip Sousa, the prominent composer. The space was used exclusively as a movie theater between 1930 and 1967, when it was owned by Warner Brothers.

Pass three lights to the Doubletree Hotel (7th Street). Parking is available in the Wilmington Parking Authority garage, just past the Doubletree on the left. The Grand is located at 818 North Market Street, between 8th and 9th Streets. Parking is also available on the surrounding streets and in the Wilmington Parking Authority Open Lot at 8th and Orange Streets.
